The ISE department at Virginia Tech offers a variety of study abroad opportunities. Dr. Wernz leads the German student exchange program with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT (formerly University of Karlsruhe).

Undergraduate and graduate students from ISE and related fields (business, economics, computer science, engineering) can participate in this one-year study abroad program at KIT (Spring semester is also possible).

Typically, students study abroad during their third year (on a four-year graduation plan). Students should start to plan early, at least one year before departure. In particular, students need sufficient German language skills. The German Department at VT offers German language classes throughout the year to prepare students.

Students who are interested in studying a year or semester abroad should contact Paula Van Curen (, the ISE student advisor and international programs specialist.
